A spy among friends book review7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Every word Elliott breathed to Philby was transmitted back to Moscow-and not just Elliott’s words, for in America, Philby had made another powerful friend: James Jesus Angleton, the crafty, paranoid head of CIA counterintelligence. It was madness for one to think the other might be a communist spy, bent on subverting Western values and the power of the free world.īut Philby was secretly betraying his friend. The two men had gone to the same schools, belonged to the same exclusive clubs, grown close through the crucible of wartime intelligence work and long nights of drink and revelry. Kim Philby was the greatest spy in history, a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War-while he was secretly working for the enemy.Īnd nobody thought he knew Philby like Nicholas Elliott, Philby’s best friend and fellow officer in MI6. ![]() ![]() A Spy Among Friends: Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal ![]()

Jernigan by David Gates7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() Gates has created one of recent literature's most memorable anti-heroes, and.established himself as a novelist of the very first order." - The New York Times "A brilliant novel. At once harrowing and hilarious, an artful chronicling of one man's free-fall into an exhilarating, devouring nihilism." - San Francisco Chronicle, "Mr. High moral art." - The Seattle Times "A sizzler of a novel." -Joseph Heller "Brilliantly handled. This is a profoundly sorrowful book, one that lingers, unbidden, in the heart." - The New York Times Book Review "In the best tradition of tragic literature, Jernigan is cathartic and stimulating. Full of dark truths and biting humor, Jernigan will be read for a long time." -Frederick Exley " jumpy, boozy, post-modern ironic belligerence. ![]() ![]()

![]() And, like most consumers, he often reads the ingredients label-without a clue as to what most of it means. Like most Americans, Steve Ettlinger eats processed foods. Sreeram Ramakrishnan, Yorktown Heights, NY () Overall, an excellent overview of the processing involved in some of the key ingredients we are now used to or "subjected to". ![]() The book does not reach the gravity of books like Omnivore's Dilemma, but still an excellent read. To be fair, the author does point out this lack of studies, in passing, in a couple of chapters. ![]() That approach is welcome, though sometimes gives the narration a lack of "closure". ![]() The book clearly provides an excellent overview of the sources, production processes and chemicals involved, some key players of each of the ingredient - without providing any specific 'judgements' on its relative health benefits - of course, all are deemed safe by regulatory agencies. ![]() Ettlinger provides an excellent journey into the science and industry of key food ingredients using the ingredient list of a 'Twinkie' as the itenary for this trip. ![]()
